IWMI to host junior quiz to mark World Environment Day 2015

The program aims at promoting awareness among schoolchildren, of the importance of water and the environment for sustaining life.

IWMI will host ‘Water and the Environment’ a schools quiz on Saturday 6 June 2015 to mark World Environment Day (which falls on June 5). The program aims at promoting awareness among schoolchildren, of the importance of water and the environment for sustaining life.

The quiz is open to all children studying in grades 7, 8 and 9 in schools in the western province of the country. Entries closed on 10 May and 28 schools have entered.

Each team will have five members. The quiz has two semi- finals and a final of five rounds each. Quiz questions will cover five areas centered on water and the environment: geography and country facts, current affairs and general knowledge, plants, trees and forests, wildlife and animal species, sports and entertainment. Audio and pictorial segments are also planned, to add interest and stimulate competitiveness among the schools.

All participants will receive certificates and gifts. The winning teams will be awarded trophies, certificates and valuable prizes of digital cameras, MP3 players and book vouchers as well as water quality testing kits for their schools. A set of encyclopedias will be presented to the school of the gold award winners.

IWMI hosted the World Water Day Junior Quiz 2014 to celebrate World Water Day last year, which was well received by the participants, teachers and parents.

The quiz is scheduled to be held at the IWMI Yellow River Auditorium and is organized in association with the Funday Times, the children’s section of The Sunday Times.
